Online Scavenger Hunt

Between the New York times, And the Star Telegram I defiantly notice how the pictures are set up to me in the Star telegram they are bigger and have just a couple on the first page versus the New york times where it had more pictures but they are a lot smaller. The New York times have a lot more columns in the news paper and the Star telegram have fewer columns. There are different stories in these papers Star Telegram are more conservative and relaxed And the Washington Post have more government issues in their stories. In the Washington Post there are more talks about golf and the Wimbeldon so it reaches a more rich society versus like Star Telegram where topics are more just local news around. There are more local advertising in the Star Telegram and the other too have some advertising but not as much and the things they advertise I would say would more expensive style stuff. there is a lot more headlines in Al Jazeera the words are smaller and nothing is really bold and stands out. CNN has a lot of red up top and the Headlines are bold black with just a couple of major headlines on the first page. The other stories they have smaller headlines versus the one that just came out immediately. And BBC has more Headlines but not as much information on the front page as Al Jazeera.

General McChrystal

As we all know a recent General of ours McChrystal was let go from the force on Wednesday for an article that appeared in the Rolling Stone Magazine. He was accused of wrong sayings about the adminstrative and he didn't necessarily say anything bad about Obama but he pretty much lead people to believe he wasn't supportive of his decisions. My whole thing with this is one why would a reporter follow a man that yes is human like all of us and does make mistakes write about this when he is serving our country. I understand the job of a reporter is to get the story but sometimes like this one getting a story caused a man his job and reputaion. On the otherhand I don't see why McChrystal didn't ask him to leave, I would never want someone following me around knowing that they are looking for me to slip up and say or do anything that will help them but hurt me. Especially right with all the things that are going on over seas I just think that it's crazy to let a general go who was trying to help our soldiers over a story that was published in the magazine. Just like everything else, it always blows over. I don't agree with him loosing his job over this and if I was the reporter write now I would feel terrible about what I have just cost this man. We all have our opinions on government issues and even though he was a General and just because he did one mistake by voicing his opinion I don't think its right at all. We need all the help we can get over seas and this to me was silly on our part to let him go.

Radio

When looking at the two sites NPR and 106.1 there were a bunch of differences between the two. I would say that the NPR website would attract an older crowd looking for more news worthy stories over the world versus the other website is defiantly attracting a more younger crowd. 106.1 has all the famous people like Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, and many more. It more talks about their concert dates and what's the latest gossip with them. NPR articles are more calm and focus on different topics like actual news going on in the world and upcoming events that still show the entertainment side but it does it in a more tasteful way than 106.1 does. The articles in NPR have a way more calming effect when you read them and pictures posted are tastefully done versus when you look at 106.1 websites where the pictures on there are more riska. A lot of the pictures look like quick snap shots and where not actually planned pictures.

I feel that talk radio should be more liberal and it shouldn't just have one opinion on certain topics. Under the First Amendment it gives people the freedom of speech and every single person has their own views and opinions on issues and it should defiantly be heard. Nothing is ever one sided and radio stations need to start gathering different audiences so that there are more liberal stations versus so many conservative ones. They say that the radio shows will try to persuade you to think one thing but I don't think it should persuade you to just think one thing it should make you think about so many different things and peoples different sides and views on topics.

13 year old kills woman

At the early age of thirteen a young boy shoots a woman to death sitting in her car. This was taken place in Detroit. He will be reevaluated when he turns 21 to see if he will be in prison for life or if he will be able to one day get out. The father makes a statement claiming that it will not do justice to his daughter if they let him out just because he killed her at such an early age. I personally can't imagine losing a child even though I don't have one of my own yet but I still think it would be the hardest pain a person could endure. The question I ask is, "What is becoming of the young children today?" I strongly feel that parents have all the power in the world to raise a well mannered and respected child whom knows right from wrong the moment he or she understands words. Kids these days absolutely run all over the place without supervision and they lack punishment for their actions. Parents should start working with their children from the time they are babies till the time they are grown to know what is acceptable behavior and what is not. I feel if this kid murdered this woman than he had to have done other things that would have triggered a parent to know that something wasn't right. But the parent could have not cared or didn't pay any attention to him. Even though when we are grown we make our own decisions a lot of that is based on the way we were raised. Now there are several cases where a child is raised proparely and still chooses to go the opposit direction. I feel that this young man should be sentenced for life for his decsion. All of our decisions come with consequences, some yes are bigger than others.

Van der Sloot

Van der Sloot was arrested in Peru last week for the murder of a 21 year old female. He beat her to death in a hotel room and just left her body there. He was arrested twice before in the disappearnce of Natalie Holloway. She was a young student who went on a class trip to Peru but never returned. They never had enough evidence to keep Van der Sloot locked up so he got away with it. Personally I can't imagine what Natalie's family is feeling. The man that we all believe should have been convicted for her disappearance years ago was let go and here it is about five years later and he did it again, killing an innocent woman. Lifetime had a movie on Natalie Holloway and I watched it when it came on and it was just so sad to see a mother so determined to do anything to find her daughter and she got no where. If they would have convicted him years ago they would not be dealing with another murder by him. It's crazy that someone like him comes from a very well known name in Peru and was raised in high society that he would be so twisted and would want to hurt another person. I mean somebody that was probably given anything and everything since he was born, that he finds comfort in destroying families by hurting their loved ones. At least he confessed to this murder and that both of these families can get some comfort in knowing that such a cruel man will no longer be free to hurt another person.

The News Wars

I don't think that people are less interested in the news but that sometimes the news can have information going out that doesn't really classify as news. I for one don't watch or read the news like I should. But since taking this class and going on CNN and Star Telegram everyday its crazy how much the news changes every minute. I can go on in the morning and look at something and by the afternoon it has completely changed and several new events have occurred. It does feel hard to keep up with the news. The news they are giving today people are hearing off all sorts of things going on in America and even places like Iraq and Afghanistan. People are very interested in those issues but sometimes the news will talk about well known people who are getting divorced or where spotted somewhere they shouldn't have been. Stuff like that I think is so irrelevant to actual issues that are going on in the world. I also get tired of seeing things like what new product works the best and what foods you shouldn't eat cause someone said they were bad. I think they go way over board with things like that in the news. Sometimes it seems like they just are trying to find things to talk about and that there really is no point to this news story. News is something people need in the world. without news we would all be wondering around having no idea what's going on. With a news paper I think the paper should have more color and brightness to it. The words are way to small. Usually when something stands out and it bright with pictures, people are more adapt to pick it up and read it. The front page would be catchy and informative with pictures and top story headlines posted on it. The paper to me has too many adds in it, I think they should limit how many adds they can have and the adds they they do have should be well put together and be places where most people would go like Target or Wal-mart. Overall the news does give us a ton of information and for the most part I am satisfied with how it is, but if there was ever a chance to change it those would be the ideas I would have to make it better.

Fort Woth Police Officer

Officer E.G. Wincoritch was arrested off duty Saturday night after wrecking his car and leaving the scene with his breath smelling of alcohol. The chief of police has been reorganizing the Fort Worth officers so they can get a handle on all these officers getting drunk and getting behind a wheel of a car. He is now the third Fort Worth Police offficer who has been arrested for DWI. I certainly feel that police officers hold a respected role in the communities and they should act in a way that other people around will respect them. Right now the Fort Worth officers are not looking so good and I think that maybe if they have higher standards when inlisting people in the Academy will limit all the young males from making one stupid mistake that will cost them their jobs and possibly hurt themselves or someone else. If I was one of the families who was effected by these officers, I would almost want to ask them how are you protecting and serving when you are out killing people with your drunk driving. I know the new chief is having zero tolerance of these actions so hopefully he will be able to get a handle on this and Fort Worth officers can get there names cleared to something better than a bunch of DWI officers. What kind of officers are we hiring? I just feel that there is way to much chaos going on in the streets and all over that we don't have time to be having these issues constantly repeated when we are wasting time that could be focused on catching criminals and making our area a safer place. With all the crime that is out there too much time is not being focused on that but how they are going to get a handle on these officers drinking and driving. This just shouldn't be an issue. I think if their had been a zero tolerance policy first hand that maybe it would have made them think twice about what they were doing.
